Abhyudaya 2008 Decoded!!

You thought you were smarter?? You thought you knew the secret ingredients to a successful event?? You thought you knew how we guys at IFMR managed the unparalleled event?? I dint think so.

Here’s the chance for all you guys to know, how we, the students at IFMR, build an event and what kind of inputs and intellect we used to manage an event having a magnitude of Abhyudaya. To give you a lucid picture, I thought it would be a nice idea to get you a first hand catch on everything about Abhyudaya 2008. You could then start inferring what has been running in the back of the mind of an IFMRian with respect to Abhyudaya 2009.

THEME

BODMAS: It’s All About Numbers

In salutation to the bedrock of modern mathematics and to India for giving the world the zero, the sharp minds at IFMR redefined the very notion of the term “BODMAS”. The theme of BODMAS evolved from the Core-Wrapper concept as we call it. The idea of the Mergers and Acquisitions is but a logical extension of the numbers game played in a large scale in the corporate world. BODMAS, acronym of “Bracket of division, multiplication, Addition and Subtraction”, is so retro that we say it should stand for - The Business of De-merger, Merger, Acquisition and Spin- off.

If the question is, why numbers and M&A? well the answer is simple. For over years, the world has been a witness to the astounding acquisitions made by India Inc. In a war where there are no prisoners, companies, right from those manufacturing coca-cola cans; to the pride of Luxemburg, none were spared. What better way then to acknowledge this, than to make it the theme of Abhyudaya- the IFMR b-school fest.

THE COLOR SCHEMES

Abhyudaya has its deep roots in culture and Indian tradition. So the main color chosen was to symbolize the reference to our deep roots which is brown. This color in its many shades in our poster was to show the diversity of our rich and varied heritage. The mild Yellow color was chosen to illustrate that only knowledge can bring out a deep understanding of a complex concept such as culture and also to underscore the importance of respecting diverse work cultures.

WHY THE GURU MOVIE CLIP?

The movie, as many are aware of, is a modified biopic of one of the most celebrated person who built India’s biggest private empire. The movie also highlights what it takes for a person to succeed in the corporate world. The idea to show the clipping from this movie was to illustrate the fact that mergers and acquisitions were nothing new. The attitude towards this corporate game was best brought out by some well chosen expressions in the end of the clip, and that was precisely why the clip was used.

THE FONTS

The fonts used were a combination of the official font of IFMR and an Indian font bearing strong resemblance with Sanskrit, for the event title throws light on the event’s origin. The font used for the BODMAS logo was to bring out the numeric nature of the theme.

THE EVENTS

The events last year opened doors of opportunities for the participants. Skills needed were varied and required a lot of forethought to succeed in the art of business. The events followed the Core-Wrapper concept chosen for that edition. The highlights of Abhyudaya 2008 were two events that were path breaking in their approach - The 11th hour (Corporate Quiz) and X% Stake (the Mergers and Acquisitions game).
